Please contact your attending physician first. He/She will help you assess the gravity of the situation and show you the most appropriate attitude. However, if you go to the emergency service, remember to take the following documents:
SIS and ID card;
Identification labels provided by your health care insurance;
Your blood group card;
The admission request issued by your attending physician, if applicable;
X-rays and recent exams’ results (e.g. blood tests);
Listing of current medications taken;
Previous hospitalization reports, if applicable;
Medical health care insurance card(s) (e.g. AssurCard, DKV);
The document of “prise en charge” for the health care insurance, if you are not a Belgian citizen (the document issued by your home country or EU, NATO, etc);
Indictment of the CPAS.
If you are unable to take the above documents with you, please ask your family and/or close friends to bring them to you at the hospital as soon as possible.
In case the admission office is closed, you can give these documents to the nurse or the reception staff.
If you find any difficulty, please speak to the hospital social service, which will surely find a solution for you. In this case, please go to see them as soon as possible so as they can help you quickly.
In any case, the person you are in contact with is bound by professional secrecy. Thus, you can be sure of his discretion.
According to the age of your child, you should think of putting the following items in his bag:
underwear, pyjamas or nightgown, robe, slippers;
a toothbrush, toothpaste, a cup;
a hairbrush, a comb;
soap, cologne (for cooling in the summer);
gloves and towels issues;
paper handkerchiefs;
nappies;
his favourite teddy bear and/or toy(s);
his rattle, his feeding bottle and/or his dummy;
clothes for getting out of the hospital.
Emergency. Ok but…
Before leaving home (or as soon as possible), ask someone close to pick up a brother or a sister at school or to join you at the hospital so that you can give him instructions relating to the children’s care, pets, home, etc.
As soon as you have time, think of speaking to your attending physician so as to inform him about the current situation. Ask him to pass by the hospital and examine the patient. In this way, he will be able to better take care of the patient as soon as he leaves hospital.
