Specifications of the Neonatal Care Unit

The Neonatal Care Unit is included in a “mother-child ward” which has a maternity, a High Risk Pregnancies Unit, a Neonatal care Unit and a Paediatric Unit.

The Service has 15 beds for the Intensive Neonatal Intensive Care (NIC) and 8 beds for the Neonatal Care (N*).

Each year, about 350 newborns infants are admitted in the Service (12% of birth).

This low level of admissions is the result of a surveillance policy for newborns in need of low care in the Maternity. The Neonatal Service works closely with the High Risk Pregnancies Unit. That Service welcomes women who need a high level of surveillance, from Edith Cavell Clinic and from Braine l’Alleud Clinic.

Specifications of Paediatric Unit

The medical team is very attentive to take care of each child and his family on a personalized way. Thus, a nurse has her own patient for the day and knows the name of each one.

The pain control (with MEOPA equimolar mix of nitrous oxyde and oxygen) and humanization of the care are the priorities of Paediatrics.

Parents are invited to cooperate to the care, in the room of the child and in the care room (lumbar puncture, venipuncture, etc.)

Before the surgery, the pre anaesthetic care of the child will be made in his own room, allowing to the child to fall asleep in his parent’s arms.
As the surgery is done, the child is transfered to recovery room. The parents remain informed by the medical team, to be present as their child is coming back.
If case of acute disease (cancer, dialysis, resuscitation, etc.) the medical can decide to transfer the child to the Queen Fabiola Children University Hospital (Huderf)
