The Unit has 15 beds. The Hospital undertakes the path of the Charter promoted by EACH (HOPE).
Parents can stay with their children just before the anaesthesia and be present in the recovery room when they come out of surgery.
Parents are present during most examinations but sometimes it is difficult to give a definite time for these.
The medical team encourages parents and advises them on how to share basic care for their children.
For serious or chronic diseases, the clinic works in collaboration with the “Cliniques Universitaires St Luc” and the “Hospital Gasthuisberg” in Leuven.
The surgeons, nurses and staff from the Emergency Service and the Unit work together, sharing the same philosophy and taking special care in pain control through several techniques.
Outpatient Unit
There is a separated unit called “Bambi” with a beautifully decorated care room, which welcomes the children for all their tests to be taken prior hospitalization. The medical team uses the “Meopa” system for pain control. Children receive a small reward after a blood test or any other test.
There are books available (Franklin in hospital) and the team encourages the parents to explain the procedure to their children.
Several tests can be undertaken: sleeping, PHmetry, breathing, pneumology, allergy, obesity, neurology
A play room is opened to the children, they can find games, toys, video’s and books.
The Paediatric Unit and the Maternity are located on the same level.
The proximity of the two Units allows the mother to be followed by the medical team while caring her child.
From a certain age, it is possible to install a webcam related to a screen and a phone (the same system is installed in the house, at the office of the parents, etc. ). That system allows to the child to see his family, his dog, his house, etc. It is a emotional bond with his home.
There is a playroom with plenty of toys, books and videos. The Paediatric Service and Maternity Service are on the same floor. This is convenient for mothers who for medical reasons need to stay in Maternity whilst their child is in the Paediatric Unit. They can easily see their baby at any time.
Possibility to install a Webcam for older children so that they can participate to the family life from their hospital bed. It is a comforting link with home.
The parents are invited to cooperate to the given treatment from 7am to 7pm.
There is a phone in each room. Ask to the Admission service a personnal code to activate this service and to return after the hospitalization period.
Each room receives a specific number during the hospitalization period.
Each room has a television and a DVD reader. The remote control can be obtained to the Admission service by paying a deposit. For private rooms, the remote control is included in the price.
Fridge available in private rooms or on request.
Free service of the Red Cross in each room
2 psychologist attached to the Unit are going to the child’s bedside on request of the multidisciplinary medical team.
Interpreters for free are available for patients foreigners and their family via the nurses of the unit or via the social worker.
In the Paediatric Unit, a responsible person for the logistic help can also help Arabic speaking families.
