The Department is situated on the 6th floor of the Hospital (North West wing)
This NIC unit has 21 beds. The N* unit has a few "mini-rooms" which allows mothers to stay in hospital with their newborn baby requiring medical attention, so that the bond between mother and child is not disrupted.
In case of multiple pregnancy, parents can also stay in a "mini-room" to be better prepared for a return to home. Nurses and doctors offer them advice and support.
Dr. Hennequin and Mrs. Slechten, in collaboration with the Parents' Association "Multiple Births" organisze sessions to support the parents. Please register with the Neonatology Administrator on 02/555 34 30 between 8.30am and 4pm.
The service welcomes about 200 babies in need of intensive care (NIC) and 200 babies needing special care ( *) a year.
For high risk pregnancies, the parents are looked after right from the start by a multidisciplinary perinatal team (onstretrician, neonatologist, midwife, paediatric nurse, foetologist, radiologist, geneticist) and specialists from the paediatric department (cardiologist, pneumologist, surgeon etc.) The team meets monthly to follow the development of the pregnancy.
The unit is highly specialized in gastroenterology surgery, neurology and neurosurgery and receives referred newborn babies from other hospitals.
During the hospitalization, the parents are regurlarly updated on the progress of their baby. Once at home, a neurologic and paediatric follow up is proposed for newborn at risk of developing problems. for instance, teh severly premature babies, born under 1500 g, before 32 weeks of gestation or showing neurologicc troubles during their hospitalization. parents of premature babies may benefit from a long term follow up with a neurologist.
Since 2000, the hospital has worked with the NIDCAP Program (New born Individualized Development Care and Assessment Program). This program aims to improve the understanding, the comfort and the future of babies who are at risk of development by improving sleep patterns, restricting noise and light, handling them with love and care, giving them the best possible environment. (Brochures on NIDCAP avalaible)
Since April 2008, the Maternity and Neonatology Service hs been part of the "Hopital Ami des Bebes" (Unicef). This association gives an added quality to the information and help affered to the parents. in this context, the Service provides a "mother-milk Bank" where mothers can store their milk for their own baby or for other babies (only with consent)
If the mother has left the Maternity Unit and is staying in a "mini room", the cost is 25 € per day, reimbursed if parents have an additional insurance.
Meals can be ordered (not included in the price)
