The unit has also 2 psychologist : Mrs. Anabel Piron and Pascale Degives who gives support to the parents during the antenatal, neonatal follow-up and in the maternity.
2 physiotherapist, Mrs. Bénédicte Guislain and Mr. Vincent Degueldre, are specifically qualified in the development of premature babies
A social worker: Mrs. Annie Struyf and 2 "medico-social" workers of the "Office National de l'Enfance" (ONE) and "Kind en Gezin" are available to assist parents.
The Neonatal unit called N* is for premature babies born after 32 weeks of gestation or for babies needing special care. If born before 32 weeks or in need of intensive care, the hospital refers the baby to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the CHU Saint-Pierre in Brussels or to the Queen Fabiola Children's University Hospital. Less often the hospital refers the child to the Erasme Hospital or the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc. When possible, the mother will be transferred to the new hospital with her baby. As soon the baby comes out of intensive care, he/she returns to the Neonatal Unit of the Etterbeek-Ixelles Hospital for the end of the hospitalization in preparation for a safe return home.
One of the 2 Psychologists also works with the Neonatal unit of the CHU Saint-Pierre, facilitating the transfer back to the Etterbeek-Ixelles hospital.
The neonatal team encourages the parents to visit the unit beforehand to get used to the medical team.
The hospitalization duration of the newborn can vary between a few hours to a few days or weeks, depending on its medical state and progress. The team encourages parents to visit their baby as soon as possible and as often as they can. The team helps the parents to bond with their child by sharing the care, talking and holding their newborn who will recognize their voices in this new unknown world.
The Etterbeek- Ixelles Hospital has been recognized as "Hôpital Ami des Bébés" (Baby Friendly Hospital - see UNICEF website) since 2006. The Neonatal Team encourages breastfeeding and the kangaroo technique whereas you hold your baby close to your chest, skin to skin for period of time according to the medical status of your baby.
The Neonatal Team works with the NIDCAP program which helps to understand the behaviour and language of newborns, to assess their development and adjust the treatment to their personal needs and comfort.
The parents can phone to obtain information about their baby. They are welcome 24 hours a day.
A brochure available at Admission gives information on every aspect of the unit and the daily life of the baby: nutrition, care, progress, well being, hygiene, NIDCAP programme, etc.
The baby can leave the hospital when an incubator is no longer needed and the baby can be breastfed or bottle-fed. Technically the baby should reach at least the equivalent of 37 to 38 weeks of gestation and weigh about 2.5 kg.
To maintain the quietness around the baby, the unit allows only one visitor at a time, accompanied by a parent and for an hour maximum. Visitors must respect the same hygienic rules as the parents (compulsory use of a locker and hand washing). Visits are allowed between 2 and 4 pm and between 6 and 8pm.
To reduce the noise which is a stress factor for the premature babies, the medical team ask the visitors to wait in a "family room".
Except for the baby’s brothers and sisters, children less than 15 years old are not allowed in this unit.
Anyone who is unwell (flu, cold, diarrhoea, temperature, skin rash, etc.) will have to get an authorization from the medical or nursing team prior to visiting.
