The Unit welcomes newborn babies who need specialized care. The babies are not necessarily premature. In some cases they need intensive care after a difficult birth, an infection or a surgical intervention.
Whatever the reason is for the baby to be hospitalized, the presence of the parents is always crucial.
Paediatricians and nurses will explain in details to the parents the given treatment and will invite them to cooperate.
NIDCAP (Neonatal Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program)
The aim of this program is to understand the behaviour and language of newborn babies, to assess their developpment and adjust their treatment to their personal needs and comfort.
NIDCAP trainer: Mrs D.Druart
There are two informative brochures available:
1. “Neonatology Unit” Guide
This brochure gives information on every aspect of the unit and the daily life of the baby: nutrition, care, progress, well being, hygiene, NIDCAP program, breast feeding, pain control, psychological help for the parents, explanation of medical terminology…
NIDCAP video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQR1iKSFdjs
2. “Back Home” Guide
This brochure gives all the necessary advices to parents on how to look after their baby back at home. There is an Association for parents of premature babies “Neonid” which helps the parents for instance by sharing their experiences.
Please contact Mrs L.Dorchy at neonid@co-link.be
The Unit occupies an entire floor and is divided in two: intensive care and non intensive care unit. In the centre, a glass "Control Tower" allows the medical team to exchange information and look after each baby without disturbing their peace. Most of the rooms are designed for one baby. There are some rooms fitted for twins. Each child has a room designed for his medical needs (luminous intensity, devices, etc.)
Parents can rest in an armchair beside the bed. If the mother wishes to, she can sleep in the room. A lounge fitted with a coffee machine, fridge, microwave, CDs and DVDs players, computer connected to the Internet is open to the parents.
The supply of medical and hygienic equipment is stored in a cabinet system with inside and outside doors so that the stock can be checked and replaced without disturbing the baby and his parents. The unit has insulated floors and walls and has recently been decorated in pastel colours.
