    University Hospital (Free University of Brussels), public hospital (network IRIS) entirely reserved for children's medicine, from birth to adolescence. All specialty services are present.

    The Huderf works with many other hospitals for acute and chronic pediatric diseases.

    Inaugurated in 1986, Queen Fabiola Children's University Hospital is the only Belgian University Hospital entirely exclusively for children.

    From birth to adolescence, the hospital looks after their medical needs. Everything is designed for them and their parents.

Neonatology

Neonatal Intensive Care * and Non Intensive Care Units

The Intensive Care Unit is located at The Queen Fabiola Children's Hospital.

The Non-Intensive Care Unit is located at The Brugmann Hospital. These 2 Units are on the 1st floor (follow the signposts "Néonatalogie") and are connected by a footbridge.

Neonatalogy Unit

The Neonatal Unit provides care for newborn babies requiring specialist treatment (premature and low weight babies) and babies needing surgery. The Unit can provide a full range of specialized intensive care.

Some of these babies are severely premature (less than 26 weeks, normal pregnancy is 40 weeks), weigh less than 1kg or require surgery.

Koala Unit has 5 cots with shower for mothers.

A dining room facility is provided for the parents.

In case of re-hospitalization in the Maternity Unit for 2 or 3 days, the mother and her newborn baby will have access to full service including meals.

The Perinatal Counseling team is composed of peadopsychiatrist and psychologists.

Unless specific authorization given by the health care team, only parents are allowed to visit their child.

Overnight Stay of the Parent

A parent may stay with his child  in the hospital as long as there are no medical reasons against it. In private rooms, an adult bed is always available.

The parents are also welcome in a guest house near the hospital

The price for the overnight stay including breakfast is 10€ per person.

The price for the overnight stay for both member of the family is 17,50 €.

Meals for Parents

Meals are available in the room at the following cost :

3,20 € for breakfast

6,40 € for lunch

4,95 € for dinner

Meals tickets can be purchased at the Admission Office located on the ground floor and handed to the nurse of the Unit (before 10am).

 

There is a restaurant in the hospital.

Opening hours

Weekdays: from 11:30am to 2:pm

At weekends, from 11:45am to 1:45pm.

Cost :

5 € for the day's specials or a cold plate

6,65 € for the day's special including soup starter, main course or grill and dessert.

The cafeteria is located in the hall of the Children's Hospital and offers a choice of sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

Shop and Facilities

Lounges equiped with fridge, microwave, stove and kitchenware are open to parents of 

hospitalized children to relax and eat, especially in the Haemotology and Oncology Unit.

A key is avalaible from the nurse of the relevant unit.

A shop is located in the main hall near the entrance of the hospital and offers a choice of basic items, flowers, newspapers, toyas, etc.

A supermarket is located at the entrance of Brugmann Hospital (Adult Hospital), on Van Gehuchten Place.

A Cashmachine is situated at the entrance of Brugmann Hospital, opposite the Auditorium PP Lambert.

Please be aware that some parking areas around the hospital are in the blue zone, limiting the authorization to 2 hours, or more if you have a special permit.

Paediatric Medicine

Queen Fabiola Children's Universitary Hospital provides a full range of General Paediatric Medicine with Inpatient and Outpatient Services.

These include paediatric endocrinology, paediatric gastroenterology, paediatric neurology, paediatric allergy and paediatric infectious disease services, paediatric oncology and paediatric haematology.

Specifications of the Paediatric Hospital

The Queen Fabiola Children's Universitary Hospital has a total of 168 beds in the Inpatient Paediatric wards :

- General peadiatric unit: 90 beds

- Paediatric surgery : 30 beds

- Intensive care unit : 10 beds

- Neonatal intensive care unit : 20 beds

- Child and Adolescent psychiatric unit : 18 beds

All the specialist works togheter closely in order to help children and their family as best as they can.

The hospital is recognized as a Peadiatric Referral Centre for several medicine specialities including acute and chronic complex diseases : diabete, cystic fibrosis, metabolic diseases,

The Neonatal and Maternity Units are called "Hôpital Ami des Bébés" (Hospital Babies Friends)

The institution has a perinatal center and works closely with Brugmann Hospital (gynecology and obstetrics)

Adoption Unit

The Adoption Unit offers support for the adopted children and their parents and works closely with all the differents medical specialities (for nutritional problems for example). The psychological and economical problems related to adoption are also examined.

Psychiatric Department

This Unit contains 6 areas :

Consultation and connection Psychiatry (children are followed from unit to unit), Psychiatric hospital (10 beds K), Day Care Center for children 0-3 years, the Reference Center for Autism and Invasive development' Disorders.

Infrastructure

Most of the departments possess a room with television. The "recovery room" is specificaly decorated for the children. A room for breastfeeding is available on the  ground floor near the Consultation Room.

A bathroom with shower is also available for parents in each unit.

Visits

Visitings hours are from 2pm to 8pm.

There are specific visiting hours for the Intensive Care Unit (62), Neonatal Department (63) and Child Psychiatry (69K). Parents must check the timings with the medical team of the relevant department.

There is a public phone (with Proton card) in the main hall of the Hospital.

Phone cards are available at Admission.

You can also use the phone in the bedroom (except in some Units) allowing you to receive calls  free of charge.

The outgoing calls will be charged.

2. After the voice message, enter the 2 digits for the Unit follow by the bedroom.

Television

A television is available in each room.

A guarantee of 35 € is required and paid for at Admission.

You can also buy a remote controle in a specific shop.

To activate the television, you must buy a card: 3 € for the 1st day  then gradually less, according to the lenght of stay.

Loan of Books

The volunteers of " The Red Cross" will visit the children and offer them a choice of books.

Fridge and Microwave

A fridge and a microwave are available in each Unit.

Psychological support is available on request for the child and his family.

Volunteers at the hospital

The Red Cross volunteers are present in the hospital to lend books, help the families and organize leisures.

The school welcomes the children of all levels (nursery, junior and senior).

Schedules are established in accordance to the health status of the child and the requirements of each Unit Department.

There is a Center of Educational Guidance which helps the child if necessary.

The lessons are given in the classroom, at the bedside during the medical treatments (dialysis), in the Day Hospital and at home after the hospitalization.

The teachings methods try to follow the individual school programs. Lessons take place every days in the morning after the doctors have seen the children, generaly, from 9am until midday.

Students have lunch under the supervision of the teachers and then return to their Unit after for a rest.

In the afternoon, there are several possibilities :

- Continuation of the usual programm (in accordance with the school program)

- Learning by themes, development of a nature project

-Observation of the nature through the seasons

- Sport activities, artistic activities, initiation to IT (computers)

- Walks in the garden of The Brugman Hospital

Students are employed by the city of Brussels to organize activities during school holidays.

Down Payment and Rates

A minimum of € 150 down payment is required for a stay of at least 3 days. The amount is calculated according to the likely duration of the stay at the hospital.

The down payment is then calculated from the final invoices.
