The "Jules Bordet" Institute is a specialized center for the research and the treatment of cancer.
The Institute only looks after adults as inpatients and outpatients but there is an outpatient radiotherapy unit for children.
There is no paediatric unit at the Institut Bordet. However the Radiotherapy Department welcomes children for their daily treatment, which never takes longer than half a day.
The Saint-Pierre Hospital next to the Institute, has a paediatric unit and works closely with the Institute.

The principle of radiotherapy treatment consists of the daily administration of radiations (X Rays, gammas, electrons or others), in order to kill the cancerous tumours.
These radiations can reach deep tissues and prevent cells to multiply.
When a child needs radiotherapy, the doctor in charge will go through all the medical and psychological implications with the parents. He will also discuss the length of the treatment (5 sessions a week).
The medical team will provide guidance and comfort to the child during the treatment, explaining the importance of staying very still for optimal results.
Through an ultrasound, the doctor will establish and mark the precise spots on the skin for the radiations.
Doctor, radiotherapist and nurse work together to obtain best results.
The treatment is painless and doesn’t require any specific preparation. Radiations to the pelvic or abdominal cavities may induce nausea and vomiting.
When the child is young (less than 3 years old), it is sometimes better to put him asleep just for the morning.
