Radiotherapy, what does it consist of?

The principle of radiotherapy treatment consists of the daily administration of radiations (X Rays, gammas, electrons or others), in order to kill the cancerous tumours.

These radiations can reach deep tissues and prevent cells to multiply.

When a child needs radiotherapy, the doctor in charge will go through all the medical and psychological implications with the parents. He will also discuss the length of the treatment (5 sessions a week).

The medical team will provide guidance and comfort to the child during the treatment, explaining the importance of staying very still for optimal results.

Through an ultrasound, the doctor will establish and mark the precise spots on the skin for the radiations.

Doctor, radiotherapist and nurse work together to obtain best results.

The treatment is painless and doesn’t require any specific preparation. Radiations to the pelvic or abdominal cavities may induce nausea and vomiting.

When the child is young (less than 3 years old), it is sometimes better to put him asleep just for the morning.

Infrastructure

There is a waiting room designed for children with toys, books, etc…

Children who have to undergo radiotherapy at the Institut Bordet are sent from other hospitals like Queen Fabiola Children's Hospital or Saint-Pierre' s University Hospital.

Psychological support to the child and his family is provided by the hospital where sandwiches, cakes, coffee, tea and cold drinks.
