Reimbursement of health care

There is a solidarity system in Belgium for the social security. It is based on the solidarity among:

• active and inactive people,

• healthy and sick people,

• people with and without income.

This solidarity is guaranteed because:

Active people pay a contribution which is proportional to their income. In addition, a significant funding is provided by the community (namely, by all citizens);

Social partners, health care funding and public authorities decide jointly on various arrangements of the system.

There is no system that is applicable equally to all citizens in Belgium because it depends on the professional of each citizen.
