The 3 social security systems

There are three main social security systems in Belgium:

To these systems are added three secondary systems: for seamen, for workmen and the system of overseas social security.

However, there are still people who are not covered by any social security system. To meet their basic needs, the government has created "residual systems" so as to ensure, after investigation of their income, the minimum allowances to be paid to them:

handicap allowances;

integration income, social welfare (public welfare);

guaranteed family benefits;

guaranteed income for the elderly.
