Zeldzame genetische ziekten vertegenwoordigen tevens ongeveer 15 procent van de opnames in kinderziekenhuizen. Het Leuvense bedrijf Diploid ontwikkelde als eerste software die gebruik maakt van AI voor de versnelde diagnose van zeldzame aandoeningen bij ernstig zieke kinderen. Deze technologie opent de deur voor genoomsequencing als een eerstelijns diagnostische test voor baby\u2019s met onbekende aandoeningen.<\/p>\n<h3>Baanbrekend werk<\/h3>\n<p>Het Rady kinderziekenhuis integreerde verschillende tijdbesparende technologie\u00ebn in een proces om de volledige genetische samenstelling van een kind te screenen op duizenden genetische afwijkingen. De Leuvense software automatiseert de interpretatie van de genetische data via artifici\u00eble intelligentie om ziekteverwekkende mutaties automatisch te filteren en te rangschikken. Zo kan men in amper een vijftal minuten de verantwoordelijke mutatie vinden onder de 4,5 miljoen mutaties in het menselijk genoom.<\/p>\n<p>Dankzij deze technologie beschikken de artsen van de intensive care units snel over nauwkeurige informatie rond de oorzaak van genetische ziekten. Zij kunnen die vertalen naar gepersonaliseerde zorg voor de ernstig zieke baby\u2019s. De verminderde nood aan arbeidsintensieve handmatige analyse van genomische gegevens levert aanzienlijke tijdswinst op.<\/p>\n<h3>Wereldprimeur<\/h3>\n<p>Voor de allereerste keer evenaart een algoritme de precisie van een geneticus bij het diagnosticeren van zeldzame aandoeningen.
